Firm fined over sewage effluent
South West Water has been fined nearly £4,500 for releasing poor quality effluent from a sewage treatment works.
The company pleaded guilty to discharging the sub-standard effluent into a Derril Water - a water course where salmon live.
It is permitted to discharge treated sewage from Pyworthy Sewage Works near Holsworthy, but the effluent must be up to a certain standard.
Environment Agency staff recorded four failures over a 12-month period.
Despite an investigation South West Water was unable to give reasons for the first two failures. The subsequent two were blamed on defective pipes.
North Devon Magistrates' Court ordered the company to pay £4,424 in fines and costs.
